Lose your Job in NY, head to Bahrain

12:34 pm on Friday, August 19, 2011

Forget the rash of human trafficking in the Arab states, there are opportunities, some even legit! So when a hospital relies on Filipino nurses to staff their hospitals, like this one in Queens that then laid off 100 of those nurses, well a door opens elsewhere.

Lose your job in NY? Head over to Bahrain! Where the sun always shines (and the weather hits a cool 50 degrees in Summer). 300 medics needed, get your resume in! Or not.

Nursing Pinoy Forum

4:30 pm on Friday, July 29, 2011

Any interest in starting a Pinoy nursing forum? Forums are really hard to create since it’s essentially starting a community from scratch, but if there’s a demand we’ll try to do it. Comment here with any interest.

Undocumented Nurses Starting Trek to Canada

7:16 pm on Wednesday, July 6, 2011

Undocumented filipino nurses (and of course nurses from other countries) are finding it obviously hard to find work in the current economic climate. However, there’s still hope, in a kind of sideways roundabout way.

Workers are finding options by trekking North to Canada from the US. There, the status in America is not a criteria when applying for landed immigrant status. Jobs in Canada are also more plentiful, particularly in areas where the economy is doing well like the province of ALberta. that doesn’t mean the demand for nurses is high, but caregivers (nursing homes for example) are in demand, albeit the pay is much lower than a nurse.

Pinoy Nurse Inherits 33 Million

7:02 pm on Wednesday, July 6, 2011

Note the heading: pinoy nurse inherits……

Apparently a private nurse in NY was bequeathed 33 million in inheritance after her employer of 20 years passed away. The story sounds a little sketchy.

Let’s hope it’s legit, and yea, I guess caring for an old rich woman for 20 years without a raise can be worth it :P

BTW, the family was left nothing…..

Will a Better Economy Mean More Nursing Jobs?

5:58 pm on Tuesday, April 5, 2011

One of the common misconceptions is that nursing jobs are recession proof. Now, it’s partially true that during hard economic times the last places to look to cut will be healthcare. I know what you’re thinking, that’s now what you’re thinking. But when it comes to our well being nursing jobs typically are safe. That does mean, however, that new jobs go unfilled, and that pay stagnates.

So although a bad economy doesn’t usually translate into massive layoffs in the medical field, it does mean that any growth will take years to materialize–just like any other industry really.

Is there some hope around the corner? Well if we look at the largest states it seems the worse is over, but that doesn’t mean that a hiring spree is imminent. San Diego Bankruptcy Attorney Cecilia Chen was kind enough to let us use some of her information on California pertaining to economic recovery. (Read on …)

50k Nurses Required in Saudi Arabia?

2:28 pm on Wednesday, March 2, 2011

I saw somewhere (not sure where, it was online, which means the number is probably not accurate), that Saudi Arabia is short 50-60k of nurses…. That’s a LOT of nurses. But let’s say it’s 1/5 of that number, 10k, and many of those nurses will come from abroad….. That shows that the brain drain of qualified nurses will continue the exodus from countries that may need them.

Pinoy nurses are always at the top of the list to switch countries to make some cash.

Libya Nurses

2:19 pm on Saturday, February 26, 2011

What does Libya have to do with nursing? How about the tune of 6000 Pinoy nurses that were in the country and are trying to get out (or have managed to get out). That’s a lot of nurses….

Update: Still about 10% left in Libya…. http://www.abs-cbnnews.com/video/global-filipino/02/27/11/90-pinoy-nurses-trapped-libya

Human Trafficking in Nursing

8:04 pm on Friday, February 11, 2011

Why is it that everytime I read something in the news about nursing abroad it has to do with human trafficking?

You know the stories.

This week there were three. I’ll chat about two.

One was from Japan, they have reduced the requirements to become a nurse there. So Filipino nurses have tried to, what I assume (and know to be mostly true) seek a better life abroad, wind up in bad situations. In Japan for example, they have eased restrictions on nursing requirements because in their first two batches of recruits only ONE passed :P (Read on …)

iPhone 4

12:09 pm on Wednesday, February 2, 2011

Who here has an iPhone? Better yet, who’s picking up the latest version?

Verizon is coming out with their version soon and that means more than just ATT customers can get their hands on the iPhone 4 (you could always get it unlocked but you’d have to pay a paycheck for it).

Should sell out, but I believe the run to get the iPhone 4 will be tepid compared to the ATT launch. Why? So many devices out now, and the iPhone is quickly losing luster and market share to the Androids…. amybe even the tablet market.
