Philippine nurses have a knack of training at home at the expense of our local economy, and then jump ship to make more money elsewhere. In the Philippines there is an entire industry built on the development and export of nurses. Of course, part of the problem is the fact there are no local jobs. So where do nurses head off to?

Well three places: Singapore, Mid-east (Saudi, UAE, Qatar), and the US.

The Us is hiring fewer nurses these days, but all that oil money is fueling growth in the mid-East.

I’m hunting down numbers for these countries. Anybody know where I can find them?

The number of Filipino nurses who sought employment in the United States fell by 42 percent last year — from 9,789 in 2010 to only 5,630 in 2011. The number sits at about 1/4 of the figure in 2007 of Filipino nurses who sought US jobs.

21,499 examinees took the National Council Licensure Examination (NCLEX) at the height of the nursing boom in 2007.

The US labor market for foreign nurses is getting overcrowded with fewer jobs available making the need for additional foreign markets to open to help nurses find work.

Partly due to funding cuts, and partly due to a glut of nurses, there is likely going to be over 300,000 unemployed nurses in the Philippines in two years. Couple that with hiring freezes in many foreign (US) hospitals, and you get the idea that trouble is on the horizon for this industry.

The PRC’s Board of Nursing (BON) current number of unemployed nurses sits at nearly a quarter million with 230,000 jobless and underemployed nurses nationwide. To compound matters there are nearly 68,000 graduates completing licensure examination to close out 2011.

Many registered nurses are now willing to work for free or even pay hospitals so they could work and gain the necessary experience to qualify them for employment abroad. That seems to shortcoming of the system. Pump out far too many nursers than feasibly possible to employ, with the almost planned expectation that these nurses will leave the country permanently.

Pay for their training here, let them leave forever.

Not a great plan..

No regulation exists to stop or penalize government and private hospitals from using the services of licensed nurses for free, Baldoz said.

The number of Pinoy nurses looking to practice nursing in the USA fell 44% from 2011 to 2010. The 9 month period between Jan and Sept 2011 was 44% less than the same period in 2010.

The loss is attributed to both fewer jobs in the US, and the increase in domestic nurses emerging from US schools.

The number of NCLEX examinees was 38 percent, or 857, lower compared to the 2,227 Filipinos who took the US nursing licensure examination for the first time during the same period in 2010.

Only 4,354 Filipino nurses took the NCLEX for the first time from January to September.

I’d be interested to know how the job market in the Philippines is for new nurses? I doubt much higher. Thus, unemployment for nurses likely took a jump.

Eventually though you all the extra nurses being pumped out of the Philippines won’t have a place to go. You can’t find much work in the US any more so Filipino nurses are looking for gainful employment in other places, namely the Arab world, in particular Saudi Arabia.

Buoyed by elevated commodity prices, the world’s largest oil producer has emerged as the most aggressive recruiter of Filipino nurse practitioners, overshadowing economically troubled America.

Nitaqat has required more than 300,000 firms in the kingdom to increase their hiring of locals, and lessen their employment of foreigners.

Saudi citizens mostly prefer to be employed in the public sector, in the civilian bureaucracy, or in banks and financial institutions, where they could work in the relative comfort of an office environment, the former senator pointed out.

Singapore, the United Arab Emirates, Libya, Kuwait, the United Kingdom, Qatar, Taiwan, Jordan and Bahrain are also still hiring Filipino nurses, though at a slower pace. This combined for a total of 3,660 newly hired Filipino nurses in 2010.

8,771 “newly hired” Filipino nurses were deployed to Saudi Arabia in 2010. These nine countries received a combined 3,660 newly hired Filipino nurses in 2010, Herrera said.
