The typical nursing student recieves a significantly smaller amount of sleep than that of other normal college students. This is mainly  because of the requirements we have to pass, the deadlines we have to meet and the nightlife we have to live (was joking about the last one… reallly…).

It is generally known that the average person needs atleast eight hours of sleep to effectively regain energy and to reduce stress. Sleep is probably the best stress relief and we just can’t get enough now can we? But, there is no scientific basis to the benefits of eight hours of sleep.

I used to have four hours of sleep a night and a few minutes during classes (I know.. I know..) But lately, my past sleepless nights is catching up to me. I can sleep anywhere, anytime and in any position I want to. My circadian rhythm don’t really agree with my schedules and my requirements, which is a good thing actually.

But back on topic, I read an article by yahoo entitled “How Much Sleep Do You Really Need?”. An excerpt

Question: How much sleep is ideal?

Answer: Studies show that people who sleep between 6.5 hours and 7.5 hours a night, as they report, live the longest. And people who sleep 8 hours or more, or less than 6.5 hours, they don’t live quite as long. There is just as much risk associated with sleeping too long as with sleeping too short. The big surprise is that long sleep seems to start at 8 hours. Sleeping 8.5 hours might really be a little worse than sleeping five.

To summarize the study (for people with short attention spans), people who sleep 6.5 to 7.5 hours live longer than people who sleep more than 8 hours for every 24 hour cycle. The number of hours of sleep and the diseases that are present in the people in the “number of sleep bracket” were recorded, compared and analyzed. Their findings though were not really written in the article. But, they generalized what was mentioned above.

So yeah, people who sleep too much are going to die early (lol). They sleep off a significant number of hours in their lives and die early..

  1. Darn it.. I thought only sleeping too long is affected. :p
I doubt that I even sleep 4 hours a day in the past weeks

  2. There’s always that “okay” range. But we never know, the stats and the data taken were all speculations and statistical. There’s no scientific backing to explain why those stats are and why they are interpreted that way :)
    Thanks for the comment!

  3. I have always slept long hours sometimes 12 or more hours I dont understand why I sleep so much can any one help?
