Afghanistan’s only pig quarantined in flu fear

KABUL (Reuters) – Afghanistan’s only known pig has been locked in a room, away from visitors to Kabul zoo where it normally grazes beside deer and goats, because people are worried it could infect them with the virus popularly known as swine flu.

The pig is a curiosity in Muslim Afghanistan, where pork and pig products are illegal because they are considered irreligious, and has been in quarantine since Sunday after visitors expressed alarm it could spread the new flu strain.

“For now the pig is under quarantine, we built it a room because of swine influenza,” Aziz Gul Saqib, director of Kabul Zoo, told Reuters. “We’ve done this because people are worried about getting the flu.”

Worldwide, more than 1,000 people have been infected with the virus, according to the World Health Organization, which also says 26 people have so far died from the strain. All but one of the deaths were in Mexico, the epicenter of the outbreak.

There are no pig farms in Afghanistan and no direct civilian flights between Kabul and Mexico.

“We understand that, but most people don’t have enough knowledge. When they see the pig in the cage they get worried and think that they could get ill,” Saqib said.

The pig was a gift to the zoo from China, which itself quarantined some 70 Mexicans, 26 Canadians and four Americans in the past week, but later released them.

Some visitors were not concerned about the fate of the pig and said locking it away was probably for the best.

“Influenza is quite contagious and if it passes between people and animals then there’s no need for the pig to be here,” zoo visitor Farzana said.

Shabby and rundown, Kabul Zoo is a far cry from zoos in the developed world, but has nevertheless come a long way since it suffered on the front line of Afghanistan’s 1992-4 civil war.

Mujahideen fighters then ate the deer and rabbits and shot dead the zoo’s sole elephant. Shells shattered the aquarium.

One fighter climbed into the lion enclosure but was immediately killed by Marjan, the zoo’s most famous inhabitant. The man’s brother returned the next day and lobbed a hand grenade at the lion leaving him toothless and blind.

The zoo now holds two lions who replaced Marjan who died of old age in 2002 as well as endangered local leopards. In all, it houses 42 species of birds and mammals and 36 types of fish and attracts up to 10,000 visitors on weekends.

Madonna Decena – Giving the Philippines a Bad Name?

Oh c’mon, I have to admit that the first news I heard of Madonna Decena gave me the “Oh yes! Another Filipino to make us proud” But damn, her latest and probably last performance at Britain’s Got Talent, just gave us a bad representation.

I admit, the Philippines does not give too many good opportunities for its citizens but the way she depicts it is just too exaggerated.  I’m sorry Mrs. Decena but the way you represented your weakness and being a cry baby on stage might have probably caused you not being able to make it to the next stage.

You’re not poor, we’re not poor. The Philippines is not a poor country.  She made this statement after being asked about how the show  changed her life she answered “Ever since I entered this competition, it didn’t change much, I’m still poor, my kids still long for me…”. Oh cmon, learn to look back and look back at your country, being in a foreign nation makes you richer than most bank managers here. You’re not poor, count your blessings. You have better opportunities than most of us do.

This is why our country won’t go anywhere soon, self-pity won’t take us anywhere at all and this is one example of the mentality of us Filipinos.  Stop crying and get it moving. Let me end with Simon’s statement “…This is not Britain’s saddest story this is Britain’s got talent…” Spot on Simon.

Never Ever Judge a book by its cover

Often told but just as often ignored, we should never ever judge someone by their physical features. This is a video I found at Youtube of Susan Boyle, a 47 year old, unemployed, “never been touched and never been kissed” woman, who showed the world what talent she has within her.

Check out this video and be in awe.. :D

What is a fresh nursing grad to do?

I’m stuck here at home, waiting for a future that’s isnt so bright. Playing World of Warcraft on scapegaming which took a week to download. I ordered Guild wars online around December but it has not arrived yet. I would look for a job, but the only hiring one is as a call center agent and I’m not really sure if I would want to be one at the moment.

All fresh graduates of the degree of Bachelor of Science in Nursing, what are you up to now?

Another Shot at a Pinoy Nursing Forum

This is my 4th shot at phnurse.com.  Since I am bored and still really want that pinoy nursing community. I will do the forum again. This blog has about 10 visitors. LOL! and none of them are frequent visitors.  But damn, let this blog be a reminder to me about how much my social life fails at the moment. So yeah, watch out for www.phnurse.com

Now that I’m done with college

I’m stuck at home with the number one nagger in the world. LOL! Yeah, she is the number one nagger in the world, calling me to her room just for the sake of calling me and forgetting why she called me again and once I’m back on the computer, she remembers why she called me and calls me again.

I’m stuck here, without any allowance, without any people to socialize with. Thank God for this blog, for my netizens and for the unlimited entertainment taht youtube brings me. Now that I am done with college I do not know what to do. Because for the past 19 years, I was studying. Now what?

I do not want to study any more. I refuse to read my books, I refuse to read any nursing related thing on the internet. Nursing is totally behind me for the meantime. Since I cannot take the  board exam this June because my School is so damn freaking slow in handling my requirements, I have time ’til december to waste and burn.

So, I opted to go places, well not now, but when I have the money. But since I don’t have money, I can’t go places. See the irony? I wanna go places but I freaking can’t unless I ask the number one nagger. LOL. This is not a mommy hate post but this is a rant post about how I am stuck in my room with no one to talk to.  All my friends are gone to their own little places and probably are feeling what I am feeling. But minus the nagging.

What do I do now? I do not really know. I’ll just keep blogging and nagging too.

I’m finally done with college

Yaaaay, I’m finally a Bachelor of Science in Nursing Graduate. After 5 years (the additional year is because of bulakbol) in nursing and the doubt that I can finish, I’ve finally done it. Now I’m back to blogging and gaming. The two things that I used to love. Welcome me back kids, welcome me back.
